Warm spiced oat milk: a 5-minute evening recipe with oat milk powder
- This warm spiced oat milk takes about five minutes on the stove and uses six ingredients.
- It is dairy-free and caffeine-free, so it works as the last cup of the day.
- One teaspoon of coconut sugar is optional, and the cup is just as good without it.
Some evenings you want something warm in a cup that is not tea, not coffee and not dessert. A spiced oat milk fits that gap: creamy, gently sweet and quiet. It also keeps well, because Ancient Nutra's Oat Milk Powder keeps in the cupboard and mixes with water, so there is no carton to finish before it turns. This recipe makes one cup, in one small pan, with a cinnamon stick, two cardamom pods and a pinch of nutmeg.
What you need
- 250 ml (1 cup) water
- The amount of Ancient Nutra's Oat Milk Powder that the pouch directions give for one cup
- 1 cinnamon stick, about 5 cm (2 inches) long
- 2 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 1 small pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon Ancient Nutra's Coconut Sugar, optional
Make it in five steps
- Pour the water into a small pan and add the cinnamon stick and crushed cardamom.
- Warm it over low heat for 4 minutes, until you can smell the spices and the surface just begins to steam. Do not let it boil hard.
- Pour the spiced water through a small strainer into your mug.
- Add the oat milk powder and whisk or stir for about 30 seconds, until no lumps remain and the cup looks smooth and pale.
- Stir in the coconut sugar if you are using it, then grate the nutmeg over the top.
Yields one warm cup. Sip it slowly, ideally while it is still steaming.
Why this recipe works
Oat milk is mild and a little sweet on its own, which makes it a good base for spices. Cinnamon and cardamom bring aroma, so the cup smells like more than it contains. Steeping the spices in the water first, then adding the powder off the heat, keeps the flavour clean and the texture smooth.
The pouch lists the product as vegan and dairy-free, made from oats, and oats naturally contribute dietary fibre. That is the whole nutrition story. This is a comforting drink, not a treatment for anything.
If you add sugar, keep it small. The World Health Organization advises keeping free sugars under 10% of daily energy, so count a teaspoon of coconut sugar as part of the day's total, not as a free pass.
An oat milk powder with clear mixing directions, so the cup comes out the same every night. Ancient Nutra's Oat Milk Powder comes in a resealable 100g pouch and mixes with water. If you have a food allergy, read the pouch label before you buy.
Three easy variations
- No sugar: leave out the coconut sugar. The cinnamon and oats still taste lightly sweet.
- Richer cup: use 200 ml of water and finish with a splash of thick coconut milk. For a full coconut version, try the warm coconut and cardamom tonic.
- No pan: drop the cinnamon stick and cardamom into a mug of just-boiled water, cover it for 5 minutes, strain, then stir in the powder.
When to drink it
Have it after dinner, once the kitchen is quiet, or on a rainy afternoon when you want something warm. It contains no caffeine. It pairs well with a plain biscuit or a few dates, and it is best made fresh, because a spiced drink left standing loses its aroma.
One honest caveat: a warm cup will not fix a bad night. It is a small ritual you can repeat, and the repeating is the point.
The bottom line
A warm spiced oat milk is six ingredients and five minutes. If you only have the oat milk powder and a cinnamon stick, make it with just those and add the rest later. Start with the cup, then adjust the spice and sweetness until it suits you.
