How to Read a Herbal Extract Label Before You Buy

Two jars sit side by side on the shelf. One says premium, potent, high strength. The other says 10:1 extract, standardised to 40 percent saponins, root only, 500 mg per capsule. The first jar is using adjectives. The second is using numbers, and numbers are the only part of a supplement label that can be checked by a laboratory. This is a five minute habit for reading the second kind of label, so that the next jar chosen is chosen on evidence rather than on packaging design. It takes one pass down the back of the pack.
Start with the botanical name and the plant part
The first two fields on a good label are the ones most often left off a weak one: the Latin binomial and the part of the plant used. Common names are slippery. Several unrelated plants share the same market name across South Asia, and the same plant can be sold under three names in three districts. A binomial removes that ambiguity entirely.
The plant part matters just as much, because compound content is not evenly distributed through a plant. Root, leaf, fruit, bark and aerial parts of a single species can carry very different chemistry. A label that names the species and stops there has told half a story. The same principle drives the difference between two barks that look identical in powder form, which is the whole subject of Ceylon cinnamon versus cassia.
Read the extract ratio as an input, not a strength
An extract ratio like 10:1 means ten kilograms of raw herb were processed to yield one kilogram of finished extract. That is an input measurement. It describes the manufacturing step, not the result.
This is where most shelf confusion begins, because 10:1 reads like "ten times stronger" and it does not reliably mean that. The ratio says nothing about the potency of the starting material, nothing about the solvent used, and nothing about which compounds survived the process. Two extracts of the same herb, both honestly labelled 10:1, can differ substantially in what they actually contain. A higher ratio is not automatically a better extract. It is simply a different recipe.
Ratios are still worth reading. They just belong in the context column, next to the solvent and the plant part, rather than in the strength column on their own.
Check what the standardisation percentage is measuring
Standardisation is the output-side number, and it is the more useful of the two. "Standardised to 40 percent saponins" means the manufacturer measures a named compound in every batch and adjusts the blend so that the finished extract holds that level. It converts a variable agricultural product into something with a reproducible specification.
Two cautions come with it. First, standardised has no fixed legal definition in most markets, so the word alone carries no guarantee. It becomes meaningful only when a specific compound and a specific percentage are printed next to it. Second, the percentage tells you about that one compound and nothing about the rest of the extract.
A marker compound is not the same as an active compound
A marker compound is chosen because it is stable, measurable and reasonably distinctive to the species. It is a chemical fingerprint, useful for confirming identity and consistency between batches. An active compound is one actually responsible for a biological effect. For a great many botanicals the active fraction is either unknown or is a mixture rather than a single molecule, so the marker is a proxy for quality control, not proof of effect. Reading it as the latter is the most common overreach on a supplement shelf, and it is worth separating the two ideas in your head before comparing prices.
Look for

Match the milligrams to the serving, not the bottle
Milligram figures are printed in at least three different senses, and they are easy to conflate. There is the weight of finished extract per capsule. There is the raw herb equivalent, which is the extract weight multiplied back out by the ratio and is always the larger, friendlier looking number. And there is the total per serving, which may be two capsules rather than one.
Read the serving size first, then the per serving figures, then work out what a single capsule contains. A pack advertising 1,000 mg on the front and a two capsule serving on the back is offering 500 mg per capsule. Neither figure is dishonest. They simply answer different questions, and only one of them tells you what you are swallowing at a time.
Find out who tested the batch
The final field is the least glamorous and the most load bearing. In the United States, manufacturers of dietary supplements are required under 21 CFR Part 111 to establish specifications for identity, purity, strength and composition, and to test finished batches against them. That is the floor, and it is a real one. Above the floor sit voluntary verification programmes such as USP Verified, which combine a facility audit with independent laboratory testing and ongoing retesting of product pulled off the shelf.
Why this matters more than any single number: when researchers at the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network analysed 272 herbal and dietary supplement products by mass spectrometry, 140 of them, 51 percent, had contents that did not match their labels. A number on a jar is a claim. A number backed by batch testing is a specification. The difference is invisible on the shelf, which is exactly why the testing question is worth asking before the price question.
Treat a concentrate as a concentrate
One last reading habit, and it applies to every extract regardless of herb. A concentrated extract is not the same as the culinary or infusion form of the same plant, and the numbers on the label are precisely what tells you so. A traditional preparation and a standardised capsule can share a plant name while delivering very different quantities of the same compounds.
That is a reason to read the milligram figures rather than a reason to avoid extracts, and it is also a reason to look each herb up individually rather than by category. LiverTox, the free database maintained by the United States National Institutes of Health, publishes a plain language monograph for most commonly sold botanicals, including a likelihood score for liver related concerns. Tribulus terrestris, for the record, sits in its lowest category, with the database noting that clinically apparent liver injury from Tribulus in humans has not been convincingly shown. Looking a herb up there takes about a minute, and it is a better use of that minute than any front of pack adjective. Anyone taking prescription medication, pregnant or breastfeeding, or managing a diagnosed condition should raise a new supplement with a doctor first.
The bottom line
Five fields, one pass down the back of the pack: binomial and plant part, extract ratio, standardisation percentage with the compound named, milligrams per serving, and evidence that a batch was tested. A jar that can answer all five has told you what is inside it. A jar leaning on premium and potent has told you what its designer wanted you to feel.
