Resilience or Recovery: What a Daily Habit Actually Buys You

Key takeaways
  • Resilience and recovery are two different jobs. Most daily supplements are sold as the first and tested as the second.
  • In a Cochrane review of regular vitamin C use, adults did not catch fewer colds, but their colds ran about 8 percent shorter.
  • That small benefit only appeared in people already taking it. Starting after the sniffles began did nothing consistent.
  • A steady daily habit buys a floor under your ordinary weeks, not a shield against the season.
  • September is the tail of the southwest monsoon. The second rains arrive in October, so the habit window is now.

Every year, a few weeks before the rains turn, the shelves fill up. Immunity powders, immunity shots, immunity capsules. People buy them the way you buy an umbrella, expecting the same kind of protection.

That is a resilience purchase. What the evidence usually describes is something quite different.

Separate resilience from recovery before you buy anything

Resilience is baseline capacity. It is the state you are in on an ordinary Tuesday, before anything has gone wrong. It is built slowly and it is mostly boring: sleep, meals, movement, not running at a deficit for months.

Recovery is what happens once something has already knocked you down. Different job, different timescale, different measures of success.

Almost every immunity product on the market is marketed against the first and studied against the second. Once you can see that gap, the research stops being confusing.

Read the vitamin C result properly

Vitamin C is the oldest version of this promise, and it has been tested more thoroughly than almost anything else on the shelf. The Cochrane review by Hemilä and Chalker pooled decades of trials in the general population.

Regular daily vitamin C did not reduce how often adults caught colds. The risk ratio came out at 0.97, which is a polite way of saying nothing much happened.

The same review found something else. Among people already taking it every day, colds ran about 8 percent shorter in adults and about 14 percent shorter in children. And when people started taking it only after symptoms appeared, there was no consistent benefit at all.

Sit with that for a second. The daily habit did not stop the cold arriving. It slightly shortened the cold once it arrived, and only for people whose habit was already running. The bottle bought on day two of a sore throat was too late to do the thing the research describes.

You probably know the pattern, because most of us have done it. The rains start, something green gets bought, it is taken faithfully for five miserable days, and then it is declared useless and abandoned. Nobody in that story is wrong about how they felt. They simply never ran the experiment the evidence is talking about.

Do not expect zinc to settle the argument

Zinc is the usual fallback when vitamin C disappoints, so it is worth being straight about it. The 2024 Cochrane review led by Nault looked at both prevention and treatment.

For prevention, it found little to no reduction in how often people caught colds, and rated that evidence low certainty. For duration, zinc may shorten things, but the certainty was low to very low and side effects were more common.

The reviewers concluded that the evidence is not strong enough to recommend zinc for either purpose. That is an uncomfortable sentence for an industry built on the opposite claim, and it is the honest one.

Understand what a steady habit actually buys

So what is left, once the shield story goes? Two things, and both of them are real.

The first is a floor. Not armour, not a ceiling, just a floor under the weeks when you eat badly, sleep short and work late. Most people do not fall ill because their immune system lacked a boost. They fall ill on the back of a month that was quietly, unremarkably depleting.

The second is the behaviour itself. A daily cup is a cue, and cues tend to drag other things along with them. The people who keep a morning drink going are usually the same people who start going to bed on time. We have written before about how to build that baseline over thirty days, and about how long a habit really takes to stick.

What it does not buy is a promise about this particular season. Anyone selling you that promise is selling past the evidence.

Where a daily green drink fits

Moringa is murunga, the drumstick tree that grows in the corner of half the gardens in this country, and its leaves have been eaten as a vegetable here for generations.

Ancient Nutra's Green Latte Mix is a moringa-based drink mix, stirred into hot or cold milk or water, one serving at a time. It is built for the floor, not for the shield.

Worth knowing what the leaf actually delivers. A 2021 compositional analysis in Nutrients put dried moringa leaf powder at roughly 25 percent protein by weight. The same analysis put its vitamin C at 15.2 mg per 100 g of dried powder, which is modest. Drying costs the leaf most of its vitamin C, so this is not the product to buy if vitamin C is what you are after.

Look for
  • A mix you will actually drink daily. Flavour beats specification here, because the only version that works is the one you keep up.
  • A serving size you can measure without thinking about it on a rushed morning.
  • Clear manufacturing standards on the pack.

One safety note, plainly. The NIH LiverTox database lists moringa as a possible rare cause of clinically apparent liver injury. It is a food eaten widely across South Asia and the attributed cases are very few, but if you are pregnant, taking blood-thinning medication, or on thyroid medication, speak to your doctor before adding a concentrated daily dose.

Start before the second rains, not during them

Timing is the practical part. September is the last stretch of the southwest monsoon. The second inter-monsoon, the one that brings the October and November rain, has not started yet, as set out in Faruk, Jannat and Rahman's 2022 analysis of Sri Lankan seasonal data.

That matters because of what the vitamin C trials showed. The benefit belonged to people whose habit was already running when they got ill. A habit begun in the first wet week is not resilience. It is a recovery attempt wearing resilience clothing.

So if you want something running when the weather turns, the useful window is the next few weeks. Pick one thing, not five. Attach it to something you already do without deciding, like the kettle in the morning. Keep it where you can see it.

Then let it be boring. Boring is the entire mechanism.
